Treatment
Anthelmintics
Types of Dewormers: Several classes of anthelmintics are effective against H. placei, including:
Benzimidazoles such as fenbendazole, albendazole
levamisole
Ivermectin, moxidectin
Resistance Management: It’s important to rotate between different types of dewormers to reduce the risk of parasites developing resistance. Use the Fecal Egg Count chart to monitor efficacy.
Dosing Guidelines
Proper Dosage: Ensure that the correct dosage is administered based on the weight of the animal. Under-dosing can lead to resistance.
Administration Routes: Anthelmintics can be given orally, subcutaneously, or intramuscularly, depending on the product.
Follow-Up and Monitoring
Fecal Testing: After treatment, follow-up fecal testing should be done to make sure the treatment was effective and to monitor for potential reinfection.
Clinical Monitoring: Watch for signs of improvement in the animal’s health, such as increased energy, weight gain, and improved coat condition.
Supportive Care
Nutrition: Provide high-quality feed and ensure adequate hydration to support recovery from the anemia and improve the animals overall health.
Iron Supplements: In cases of severe anemia, iron supplements may be beneficial to help restore blood levels in cows.
